Stranded Knitting With Two Hands

There are so many amazing designs coming out for garments and accessories that require you to knit with two colors at the same time, a method known as stranded knitting. The prospect of stranded knitting can seem quite daunting at first, but with a little practice you too can learn how to knit one of these colorwork masterpieces! During this class students will knit a two color stranded cowl while learning the following:

  • How to hold our yarn in two hands and maintain even tension
  • How to carry one strand while knitting with the other
  • How and when to “lock” a strand to the wrong side of the fabric
  • How to read a colorwork chart
  • How to create a turned picot cast on and bind off
  • How to choose colors using basic art theory

Materials List
This class involves homework in preparation for each class. Please consult a shop employee before making any purchases.

  • The Potato Leaf Cowl pattern (available at the Acorn)
  • 2 skeins of DK weight yarn (Wedgewood Fibers DK and Tosh DK are recommended in the pattern). One skein should be tonal or solid in color and the other skein may be variegated (it is okay to go with two tonal yarns, but not recommended to choose two variegated yarns).
  • Two 16” or 24” circular needles, one is size US 5 and the other in size US 6 (please see the note about gauge in stranded knitting)
  • Stitch markers that open and close
  • a crochet hook for picking up stitches (optional)
  • Highlighter Tape or a Knitter’s Pride Pattern Holder
  • Notebook and pen
  • Wool wash

Note about gauge when stranded knitting: Gauge is not too terribly important as this is not a fitted garment and no gauge swatch needs to be knit. However, people often knit tighter with stranded knitting, so if you are already a tight knitter it may be best to go up a size in needles from the start.

Before the first class, cast on and knit rounds 1-13 of The Potato Leaf Cowl

Skill Level: beginner
Skill Details: Beginner to Intermediate
Requirements: Students must be comfortable with the long tail cast on, the knit and purl stitch, making yarn overs and K2tog (knit two together). While this class is designed for beginning knitters, we will not be taking time to teach these stitches and students are encouraged to review them before class.
