Cable Forward

There's a mystery involved with cables that may not be as difficult as you think.  Through stranded knitting this class will help you understand the simple way in which cables interact with their neighbors to create a seemingly complicated fabric. We will focus on learning to read a chart as an image and how to predict whether a cable should cross over or cross under in its next move.  In addition you will learn tricks to prevent errors in cable directions, how to prevent the fabric from puckering while stranding, and how to count rows and rounds in cabled fabric.

Materials for class

  • Two skeins of #4 (worsted weight yarn), 100 yards each in contrasting colors. Brooklyn Tweed Shelter is a great choice for two solid color selections.  For a stained glass look Noro Kureyon pairs nicely with a contrasting solid color in Shelter.
  • The Habitat Hat pattern by Jared Flood
  • US #8 (5.00mm) and US #7 (4.50mm) needles or size needed to get gauge with larger needles
  • Safety pin style stitch markers
  • Highlighter Tape
  • Cable needle
  • Darning needle
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes

With one color of yarn and larger needles knit a swatch working in the round to obtain a gauge of 4.5 sts x 7 rounds per inch in stockinette stitch. Do not bind off and do not cut yarn.
