Knitting Without a Net – A Freeform Knitting Course
This class takes the skills learned through knitting all types of projects and applies them in an improvisational manner to create something completely unscripted. Free-form knitting can broaden your skill set and take your work to a new level of creativity.
We will create a 7”x7” swatch using a variety of knitting techniques that can be aggressively blocked to about 12” x 12” and demonstrates knitting without a pattern or chart. Stitches used include, but are not limited to, I-cord cast on, garter tab cast on, increases including make 1 left (m1L) or make 1 right (m1R), wrap and turn, intarsia, decreases including slip-slip-knit (SSK), 3-stitch decrease, knit two together (K2Tog), I-cord edging, and stretchy I-cord bind-off. Additional techniques may be introduced as well.
Skill requirement - Advanced knitter
- US #10.5 (6.5 mm) OR US #11 (8.0 mm) 16" (40 cm) & 24" (60 cm) circular needles in either fixed or interchangeable tips.
- At least 2 laceweight or light fingering non-superwash* yarns in the colors and textures you want. For example, Einband, mohair/silk and alpaca/silk blends work well. Bring enough yarn to create a swatch approximately 7" x 7" (blocked size will be about 12" x 12"). Swatches weight approximately 20 grams.
- IMPORTANT: You can either buy your yarn in advance or you will also have the opportunity to buy yarn during the first class. Your 10% class discount will apply.
- *Superwash yarns can be used but their stretch is more exaggerated.
Select a photo to use as inspiration for your swatch. This can be a landscape, a photo of a garden, a building, a pet, an abstract painting, anything that appeals to your sense of color and design. The goal is to use this photo as an inspiration and not necessarily to copy it directly. It can be in color, black-and-white, or shades of gray or anything that you find appealing.

Blocking mats and T-pines provided for use during class.
Class minimum - 3 students
If the class minimum is not met, students will be notified prior to the class start date and a full refund will be given.
